Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Editora Saraiva Partner to Bring Innovative Math Solutions to Brazil

Global education leader continues to provide a better experience for educators and students

FRANKFURT, Germany — October 15, 2009 — Houghton Mifflin Harcourt International Publishers today announced the global education leader’s partnership with renowned educational publisher Editora Saraiva to implement breakthrough math programs in Brazilian classrooms. Editora Saraiva completed a full cultural and linguistic localization of these programs for the Brazilian Portuguese market, and aligned Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Destination Math solution to the Brazilian curriculum.

“Combining the innovative educational leadership of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt with the knowledge base and expertise of Editora Saraiva generates an important transformation in the Brazilian classroom,” said Terry Nealon, International Publishers senior vice president, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “Destino: Matemática is an integral part of that transformation.”

Editora Saraiva has already launched five of Destino: Matemática’s seven courses to market, and expects to release the two remaining courses next month. The launch has been very successful, attracting 25 private schools to date, mainly in the Brazilian southeast region. In addition to private schools, Destino: Matemática is also gaining momentum in the public sector, where correlations with official evaluations can help increase math literacy among state school students — a major goal for Brazilian education authorities. Destino: Matemática is already helping more than 10,000 students in Brazil, and the state of Sao Paulo expects to authorize its first contracts with municipalities by January 2010.

With the launch of the Brazilian Portuguese language version of Destination Math, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has localized digital content solutions in more than ten languages, supporting more than 20 different national curriculum standards. The language versions currently available or in development include: Arabic, Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Iberian Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Korean, Hungarian, Afrikaans, UK English and US English. Additionally, localized versions of English-language content will align to the national curricula of Ireland, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, India, South Africa and the Caribbean Islands.

Localized versions of the Latin American Spanish-language content will align to the national curricula of Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and Central America.
