Houghton Mifflin Harcourt K–12 Publishers Appoints Scott Bowker Senior Vice President and Manager of Supplemental Supply Sales

BOSTON — December 11, 2009 — Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced the appointment of Scott Bowker, one-time SVP at Scholastic Inc., as Senior Vice President and Manager of Supplemental Sales of its K–12 publishing division.

Most recently, Scott worked with The Sandhill Consulting Group and Tutor.com to help build a school sales organization. Scott has also served as Senior Vice President of Sales and Education Services at Scholastic Inc., where he led the 200-plus-person education field force. During Scott’s eight-year tenure at Scholastic, he built a high level, strategic sales organization and oversaw growth in sales of 70 percent and sales of READ 180, Scholastic’s core intervention program, of more than 600 percent. Scott also previously worked as an Elementary Teacher, Sales Representative and Regional Manager at Silver Burdett and Ginn, and Vice President of Sales and Marketing for RCL, a division of Lyrick Studios.

Scott has a proven track record of developing and implementing strategic process initiatives and organizational structures which bring focus to the organization, maximize sales efforts and consistently exceed revenue and profitability targets. He also has extensive experience with product development strategies, budget analysis and management and integration of business units. His experience spans work in more than 80 countries in all aspects of educational publishing including book clubs, book fairs, trade sales and distribution, educational technology and core and supplementary sales.

As the new SVP and Manager of Supplemental Supply Sales, Scott will report directly to Rita Schaefer, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for K–12. In his new role, he will be tasked with developing the supplemental sales group to meet the growing need and importance of intervention products to improve student performance. He will work closely with representatives and managers across the entire organization to optimize all sales efforts and lead a competitive team that is pointed at future funding sources and opportunities.
