Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Donates More than 100,000 Books in 2009

To celebrate its 178th year, HMH plans to donate 178,000 books to non-profit groups and school districts in 2010

BOSTON — December 23, 2009 — Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced that this week’s donation of 10,000 books to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America during the holiday gift drive on NBC’s Today Show brings the Company over the 100,000 mark for books donated in 2009.

To honor its 178th year, the Company plans to donate 178,000 books in 2010.

“As the oldest educational publisher in the nation, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt recognizes its vital role in educating young minds and providing the best resources to help them achieve their goals,” said Barry O’Callaghan, Chief Executive Officer of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “We look forward to continuing our 178-year-old legacy of educating future generations into 2010 and beyond.”

In 2009, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt donated books to many worthy schools and organizations, from public school libraries in Boston and Cleveland to struggling school districts in Louisiana and California. During one weekend in July, the Company donated 25,000 books to Boston Public School libraries as part of Kevin Youkilis’ Hits for Kids program. In December, more than 25,000 textbooks and resources were given away to teachers in the Los Angeles area to help fill a major void in budget-strapped classrooms.
